DIY Faux Pumpkin Vase September 25, 2014 | As promised, today I am sharing how to create the embellished faux pumpkin vases that were part of our Fall decor featured in Tuesday’s Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours Post. If I am being completely honest, they are so easy to make it’s almost silly to share, but I decided to also let you in on a few of the secrets that made mine SO easy AND cheap. I’ve long seen pumpkins used as vases and loved them, but the newest cover of Good Housekeeping really got my creative juices flowing. I was set on recreating their gorgeous centerpiece, but first had to overcome a few challenges. First, ain’t nobody got time to carve and gut a real pumpkin. Next, I didn’t have access to the gorgeous fresh blooms they used. And lastly, I couldn’t afford to spend more than $30 or so dollars on it. Here’s how I managed to overcome these obstacles and create the pumpkin vase of my dreams…ha! Isn’t this cover gorgeous?! But, look at all of those gorgeous ranunculus that aren’t even close to being in season…not fair. So here you go… I decided that the whole pumpkin carving thing was not going to happen. I did not have the time or energy, and quite frankly, I wanted a centerpiece for the entire season, not just a few weeks. I quickly learned that faux pumpkins are expensive. Like $15-30/ea…say what?! Well, I lucked out bt stopping into Michaels when they were 60% off, so I got 2 medium sized pumpkins for $6.99 each. I can handle that. I used a bread knife to saw off the top and the entire inside is hollow. I used my Dollar Tree box of gold thumb tacks to embellish and then placed a glass vase inside. I used newspaper to surround it and keep it steady in there. The next trick is that half of the arrangement is made of fake florals (gaaaaaasp!). Not normally a fan of the silk flower, these were too good to pass up, especially for this project. You guys, the ranunculus and dark peonies are from Wal-Mart!! I swear. Two dollars a stem and very very well done for silk. I placed them on the outside of the vase and they were perfect fillers and so festive with the color scheme. Now you know my secret…Wal-Mart has great faux florals. Price Breakdown: Pumpkin: $7 Gold Thumbtacks: Dollar Tree $1 Glass Vase: Dollar Tree $1 Faux Florals: 5 stems $10 Fresh Flowers: Trader Joes $7 $26 total and most of it can be re-used throughout the season, as you will only need to replace fresh flowers. Such an easy project, even for those of you who consider yourselves lacking in the craft-y department. They make amazing centerpieces for your Fall tables, Fall birthday parties, or just even Thanksgiving tables. And now you know my secrets…shhh! Happy Thursday, friends and HAPPY FALL! Also, in case you missed Tuesday’s post with the full tour, you can see it here. Also, quite a few of you have been loving the Fall wreath tutorial, so if you missed it, you can find it here.
