ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: WEEK FOUR April 24, 2014 | Um, week what? No way I just typed FOUR?! (Insert panic) EEEeeek! Here we are with only two (and in reality one and a half, leaving time to style and photograph) weeks left in the One Room Challenge. If you are stopping by for the first time…catch up here, here, and here. We did get a lot done this week, but there are quite a few things still on the punch list…and most consist of accessories and styling….which we all know is the hardest part. I felt like my update was pretty lackluster last week since I felt like poop, so I decided to photograph the entire room for you to see this week and then I won’t show the whole thing again until the reveal. Here goes…. Here were my #ORC #oneroomchallenge Instagrams this week. A funky Urchin score from Hobby Lobby for $6 and the painting of the galvanized pipe for the curtain rods. Follow along on Instagram for updates during the week! My favorite project had to be the curtain rods! A good friend constructed them for his sun room and was kind enough to share a very detailed DIY in this post, and I was able to use it to put mine together. The only difference was that I was painting mine and that really opens up an entirely new can-o-worms when dealing with pipe. The guy at Lowes was very very helpful and as he was cutting my pipe to length, made sure to tell me to sand it down really well before priming/painting, as these pipes have a very thick layer of oil on top of them. And that they did! Ugh. The sanding was a beating. I then used a heavy duty primer and finally my favorite Valspar Metallic Gold to spray them with. A few tips: *Make sure to sand throughly *Let dry for at least 24 hours *For any length greater than 70” wide I would use a middle support, which requires another flange/connector and a cut to your pipe. *Also for anything over 70” I would use at least 3/4” diameter pipe (which is what I used). Here’s the final product: I am so happy with the way that they came out. The entire situation here (including the drapes, story in last weeks post), cost less than $150. Boom. I also shared inspiration for the focal wall last week and we were able to install it (for the most part) over the weekend. There’s a get up like this on each side of the fireplace on the “focal wall.” I used chair rail moulding (the only kind I would find with identical edges), cut to fit within our crown moulding and baseboards. I wanted something that would add depth to the wall. We then hung the frames on top of it for an additional layer. I also bought spotlights, but am starting to think that they will be too much and begin to take away from the fireplace (which I want to remain the star), what are your thoughts…see below. Now here’s a photo of the entire space, but first remember where we started? Before: Now at week four: Crazy how much brighter it is right? I needed bright. Thoughts on the photo lights for above focal photos? Next, thinking that my thrifty little Target X benches will get a bold stripe update…I love the pop in the center of the room (below)… My big challenge this week, is this beast that I haven’t shared with you yet. She’s a secret in the room (that at a certain angle) will just jump out at you and, at this point, is really scary to look at. The previous owners had doors on it and used it as a strange TV cabinet. When we moved in, I had our handy man take the doors off, re-frame it and add shelving so that I could style it as a book case. It’s still kinda funky and I wish it was wider and more open, but it will have to work. See the hot mess below… ummmm why is there an ab wheel in my bookcase? and an industrial sized antibacterial? and that mess of wires to the left….don’t even get me started. I’m so shame. This whole thing is getting ripped up and put back together. Wish me luck. On the agenda this week:Fabric for wingback? Is it even a go?Pillows for sofa?Lighting/Lamps?Houseplant (fiddle leaf?) for right of fireplace (any good recos for this in CLT)?Toy storage solutions?Cornice Boxes for breakfast nookStyle book casePrints for focal framesRecover X benches Whew, I’m tired just typing that! Thanks for following along, until next week sweet friends! Make sure to check out everyone else’s progress here and below…killer inspiration! Abby M. Summer Hogan says April 24, 2014 at 10:56 AM Wow, girl, you are rocking it!!! I love the boards and frames on either side of the TV. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE how the curtains and rods turned out! I love your little nook too. I don't know how your house is layed out but it would look really pretty as a fancy little bar area. As for the fiddle leaf, I bought a wimpy one at home depot but it didn't do to well so I ended up getting a 2nd one at Ikea and it is much bigger and doing very well!
