One Room Challenge: Media Room Makeover October 5, 2013 | Every year a fabulous group of design bloggers host what they call the “One Room Challenge.” They give themselves 6 short weeks to totally overhaul one room in their (or their clients) homes and blog about their progress each week. I have followed along on a few challenges now and was ecstatic when they opened it up for any and everybody to partake in. So here goes….I’m signing up! Honestly, I think that it might be the only was for me to get my booty in action and make the largest room in our house comfortable and functional….and FUN! Ah, the Media Room. I’m not a fan of a media room. I like cozy spaces.. not ginormous footprints in the floor plan. So now I am faced with this dilemma…hear me out. I need the media room to be three things….a guest bedroom, an office space, and a playroom. Since all of our family is out of town and they tend to travel in herds (don’t get me wrong….I love this and having a full house…it’s my favorite!) I still need two guest rooms. We have a full size bed that is designated for this room. I also need a cute and fun, girly workspace. My desk and computer lives here too and I would like a space in which I feel inspired and creative. Lastly, sista girl LK needs a place to play. I’m sick of the toys crowding up my living room…ain’t nobody got time for that. I think she’d be so pleased as a pickle with her own little space up here where she can use her imagination and read lots of books…and where there’s no TV. Basically, I need all of these things in one room and they all need to look cohesive and cozy…no room dividers involved. So do you think I’m crazy? Did I bite off more than I can chew? Duh….of course I did. You think I’d learn by now. Anywho, I’ve already signed the hubby up to help (I guess he’ll find this out when he gets his “new post” email I signed him up for…ha!) and this is gonna happen. The budget is tight and there will be lots of fun (and not so fun) DIY’s involved. Follow along and cheer me on, wontcha?! Lord knows I need all of the help I can get. Okay here’s the inspiration: The anchor color is red. SOOO out of character for me (I immediately think back to bad 90’s dining rooms), but it’s been speaking to me lately and I think that its actually the perfect color to carry through the three very different spaces. Accents will be blue-ish/turq and metallic gold/brass. There will be LOTS of pattern involved. Let’s see if I can pull this off. How I see the layout of the room is below. The pitch of the house also causes each side of the room to have sloped walls/ceilings…stunning for design, I know….NOT! Oh and the lighting is bad. real bad. Like only two dim lit cans for the entire room. Awesome. Awkward, right? Let’s work some magic. I think that using only the mattress and boxspring on a frame and turning them longways to look like a daybed is going to make a world of difference. The before photos. WARNING: If you have any sort of anxiety or OCD tendancies, these photos will surely send you into a panic…so don’t look. To my defense…we moved across the country and into this house at 7mo prego and this poor room was a dumping ground for any and everything that I didn’t yet know what to do with. Dear Jesus I can’t believe that I’m posting this….this is real life people. Notice LK chillin’ in her rock-n-play while we tried to dig our way through. LOL The bedding is going…don’t you worry your pretty little head. Obvi, we have a lot of work to do but I’m on a mission! I will blog each week about my progress and share DIY victories and failures along the way. Glad you’re following along! And, seriously, check these ladies out. Some awesome blogs to add to your roll as you follow along with their progress!
Linda {Calling it Home} says October 5, 2013 at 10:58 AM Don't worry for on second about posting those pictures. So many people have a room like that in their homes. I still have one, too. I hope your husband smiles when he opens his email. Thanks for joining in. You can do this!
Matt Fitzsimmons says October 5, 2013 at 1:00 PM I love the RED idea and have been thinking about that for my new living space in our new home! The entire house is white (you know I hate!!) but for first little bit, I will need lots of colors–not on my walls! Good luck, can't wait to see. I'm waiting for you to do my new formal room with my FAB new couch! 🙂 Love you!!
