DIY Play Kitchen REVEAL! June 5, 2014 | I’m pretty darn excited to finally share this project with you…mainly because it’s so special to us. Of course our gal had to have a play kitchen at some point. My mom always talks about how much I loved my wooden play kitchen as a toddler and I always knew Landry needed one. For us, the off the shelf kitchens from the big box stores seemed a little impersonal and a lot over priced. We decided to go about creating one for her ourselves and it turned into our favorite project yet. Although it was really created as a gift for her first birthday and was finished back in February, we decided to hold off on giving it to her as she was loaded down with new toys after her birthday. She absolutely loves it and watching her explore every nook and cranny, toss around the utensils and be overly concerned with not burning her cookies in the oven, nearly made our hearts explode. We just sat back and watched her for almost an hour just play. There are tons of photos to follow that I won’t apologize for…happy cooking, friends! I will share more details on how we went about converting an old $7 ReStore TV Cabinet into this fun/functional play kitchen in a later post, but here’s a quick reminder of what we started with: And here’s the finished kitchen: Here’s a punch list for the overhaul: -Prime and Paint -Removed Drawers -Cut out and attached right bottom piece with hinges as a door -Cut out and attached left bottom piece (with plexi window) with sliding hinges on bottom as an oven. -Made holes and added a faucet (store bought) and a “sink” (stainless bowl) -Cut/primed/painted wood block black as stove base -Glued CD’s down, followed by cooling racks on top as “stove burners” -Made/painted stove knobs out of wooden discs -Hung Chandelier (Ross) -Attached tension rod and strung curtains -Replaced glass in left door with plywood that we painted metallic silver to complete the “fridge” -Cut and attached shelves -Cut, attached with sliding hinge and covered with fabric the ironing board -Added hardware (Wal-Mart) to fridge, oven, and door Sources: Wooden Food/Cookies: Melisa and Doug Stainless cookware: Ikea Felt Food: Etsy (gift from a sweet friend) Fabric: Amy Butler Dish Towels/Utensils/Baskets: Dollar Tree Chandelier: Ross Dress for Less Print: Created by moi As I mentioned, I will go into a more detailed post about the nitty gritty soon, but I had to show you the pretty pics all at once. So, feel free to ask any questions in the comments and I (really Dan) can try to answer them in the next post. Isn’t this a fun project?? We adore the end result and love that not only does it match her play room perfectly now, but it also is so functional. We learned so, so much through this project and are so happy we did it. Hope that you enjoyed 🙂 *All photos were taken by me for Charming in Charlotte, please do not use without a link back to this blog or written permission.
