DIY Jewelry Organizer June 26, 2014 | What you’re about to see was about the most long-overdue project in my entire home. I hoard costume jewelry. It makes me happy and I’m not sorry about it. I like being able to switch out and accessorize according to how I’m feeling that day, and until I can have a closet full of the real thing (ahem, never)…I will probably continue my hoarding tendencies. Regardless, it was getting out of control and just needed some organization. As much as I would like to pretend that my closet looks like this…it really is more like this and there’s really no room for a nice jewelry display…unless I made use of the wall space in between my side and my hubbies side. So, that’s what I did. I decided to maximize the 32” x 36 ” of accessible space there and (with lots of hooks and a huge purge) made it work perfectly to house and display my pretties. I, for once, actually did it all by myself this time too…so that should tell you just how easy it is. It was basically just drilling a few holes and using a kit of assorted hooks and plumbing hardware outfitted to suit your needs. I also used a Z Bar to hang it (or “Picture Hanging System”). I used the 7” option and it just distributes the weight of the piece out across the wall and makes it extra sturdy…I use the larger size to hang our headboards, too! See below for the deets on how to assemble… Supplies: ((I got all materials via Lowes) Play wood cut to size Desired primer and paint Dowel Rod (I used extra small for earrings) 7” Z Hook (hardware aisle) Galvanized Floor Flange Galvanized Nipple Galvanized T Bar (to connect) PVC Pipe (I used PVC because it was dramatically cheaper, fits into galvanized, and they cut to desired length in store) 2 PVC pipe caps Masking tape (for stripes) Assorted Hooks (hardware aisle) How to do it: -Have Lowes cut down your plywood to put your measurements -Sand down the edges -Prime -Paint base layer (should you be doing stripes, if not skip the next few steps) -Choose desired stripe width and measure/mask -Paint contrast layer (I used spray paint) -In meantime, you can also paint and prime galvanized pipe, PVC pipe, and dowel rod -Drill pilot holes where you want to insert hooks -Screw hooks in desired locations -For earring storage, I used 3 closed hooks (evenly spaced) and threaded the dowel rod through them -Assemble bracelet bar (attach flange first, then nipple, then connector and insert PVC pipe into either end, cover with PVC ends) -Next, attach Z bar to back of plywood and attach it’s mate to the wall. Done, it’s ready to hang! Whew, you guys have no idea how much better I feel after having this hot mess organized…and it’s so pretty to look at in the mornings. A super easy project if you’re in the same costume-jewelry-hoarding situation. Happy Thursday! JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.

charmingincharlotte@gmail.com says June 30, 2014 at 12:11 PM Thanks Pam! I have always used a small tackle box for my costume posts…not the most glamourous method, but it works perfect. I throw it in my suitcase to travel too, so nothing gets mixed up and tangled. Its hanging on a hook underneath the big board 😉 xo
Jennifer @ Dimples and Tangles says July 2, 2014 at 9:28 PM Mallory, I don't know what I like best! The stripes, your gorgeous jewelry, or the styling of your space!
