Staying Creative: LACalligraphy December 15, 2014 | So, last month I decided to start a monthly series called “Staying Creative” highlighting some of my favorite creatives out there and you guys were so receptive to it, I’m happy to publish it again today. This month is extra special though because I’m talking about one of my dearest friends, Laura. She was one of the first smiling faces that I met when I moved to Dallas and we’ve been friends ever since. She’s always on top of the latest and greatest trends in the design world, has a great sense of personal style and has a social calendar that makes my head spin…on top of that, she truly has the biggest heart and the most creative spirit. I’m so happy that she’s decided to make a business of her beautiful penmanship and can’t wait for you to see her work… Truth be told, I am so fascinated with handwriting. It’s one of the creative aspects that I have yet to explore, but I am truly dying to learn. AND when I get a beautiful, hand-addressed envelope in the mail, I do a little happy dance and open is very carefully because it just seems so special. When Laura told me she was starting a calligraphy class I was over the moon excited to hear how it went and see where she took her new skills. It’s been so fun to see her handwriting and style evolve and I’m SO impressed with how quickly she’s taken to the art of calligraphy. Learn more about her business below and how she’s taking the creative leap and launching and Etsy shop…. “I’ve always been a “handwriting” person… to the point where I used to practice for 30 minutes on my cursive after school because I WANTED to. What third grader does that?! I went to school for Interior Design and had a successful career in High End Residential (which I’m always contemplating going back to) and Commercial design, but now am on the sales side, so I rarely get a chance to be super creative when it comes to work. I knew I needed a way to channel my artistic side, so when my mother gifted me a series of calligraphy classes, I jumped at the opportunity. Calligraphy is kinda of my “thing” now. I’m the girl that always hand writes greeting cards to put on my packages, I calligraphy thank you notes, and when everyone else comes home to a glass of wine to relax, I pull out my light box and ink. Like they key to anything… practice makes perfect (and I am still FAR from perfect!) I have been doing small jobs here and there, mostly through word of mouth… a wedding for a friends sister, Save the Dates for a cousin, baby shower invites for my SIL, holiday cards for some friends, but through the encouragement of friends and family who I have done work for, I decided to start an Esty shop. SO out of my comfort zone, and I sometimes I feel like a total hack when I see what other people can do regarding calligraphy, but I hope by starting this it helps me earn a little extra money and can turn my hobby into a small side business where I get use my creativity! My end goal is to have a successful side business, and possibly get to the point where I can start developing my own custom invitations and not just addressing invitations!” Isn’t it just beautiful?! And so impressive how she can translate from more formal to more funky! Make sure to visit her Etsy Shop (her pricing is incredibly reasonable!!!) or be in touch directly for a custom piece or inquiry about invites {lchancellor@gmail.com} Happy Monday, friends….stay creative!
