DIY Orchid Planter March 6, 2015 | Okay, let’s chat. There are a few things that come to mind that I’m just flat not good at…sports, laundry, and keeping orchids alive for longer than a solid week…to name a few. For real…one ice cube, ice chips, fertilizer, half light, full light, no light….whatever the shiz people say it takes to keep them alive…I fail miserably every time. I gave in. I caved to the faux. Not normally a fan of silk flowers, but I made an exception here because #1 I love the look of orchids and #2 they serve as the perfect solution for this troublesome space. Not going to lie, I shopped around for some sort of pre-made solution and let me tell you, people are proud of their faux florals…they are SO expensive! I decided to get a little crafty and DIY something and I have to tell you I love it and love that I spent well under $50 on it! See below…. So here’s the problem spot in our kitchen. This little nook is in desperate need of a makeover, but for now I’ll continue to cover up the problems with orchids, mmmk? Anyway, I needed height between the corner windows and had been achieving it with the white cake stand. Well, I want my cake stand back and hated that temporary orchid situation. I also needed something substantial and pretty that wouldn’t overwhelm the all white kitchen. So here’s how I went about creating my planter and what you’ll need… -Apothecary Jar (I used a wide mouth jar from Michaels, with my 40% off coupon of course!) -Floral foam as your base -Spray paint (I wanted my base to have a reflective, mercury glass feel…see below for exact can) -Individual Orchid stems. They had quite a few at my local craft store, but I would “splurge” here and get something that looks very real. These were $12 each and I caught them on sale for 50% off -Orchid leaves // Stems. I found mine at the craft store, in floral and next to the succulent leaves. -Moss -Dowel Rods (I sprayed mine gold) -Mini hair clips (also sprayed gold) How to: 1. Spray Jar 2. Secure floral foam in jar 3. Cover with moss 4. Insert leaves into foam 5. Insert stems into foam 6. Position dowel rods to stabilize stems 7. Use small clips to secure stems to rod After: I can’t believe that it’s been so many months since I posted a DIY! I filled it with a cookbook holder and cookbook and it is a seasonal cookbook, so I change the pages to reflect the seasons (it has nice color pictures) I also stuck a plant and my silver salt and pepper holders there on a nice tray. I like your version too!
